Billiards Rules: How to Play 8-Ball, 9-Ball, and Straight Pool
Three games dominate pool halls: 8-Ball, 9-Ball, and Straight Pool. Each uses the same table but plays completely differently. 8-Ball is strategic. 9-Ball is fast. Straight Pool is a marathon.
8-Ball Rules
Two players, two groups (solids 1-7 and stripes 9-15). Clear your group, then pocket the 8-ball in a called pocket. Fouls give your opponent ball-in-hand anywhere on the table. Pocketing the 8-ball early, scratching on the 8-ball, or sinking it in the wrong pocket is an instant loss.
9-Ball Rules
Balls 1-9 only. Hit the lowest-numbered ball first on every shot. Pocket the 9-ball (by any legal means) and you win — even on a combination or carom. Three consecutive fouls = loss. Faster and more dramatic than 8-Ball.
Straight Pool (14.1 Continuous)
Pocket any ball for 1 point. Call every shot. When 14 balls are down, they’re re-racked and play continues. First to 100 (professional) or 50-75 (casual) wins. Tests cue ball control more than any other game.
